Help with Negative Splits

Setting up

  1. Open the Mac app first. It makes the key your iPhone uses to find your Mac, and iCloud Keychain brings it to the iPhone.
  2. On the iPhone, sign in to the same Apple Account, with iCloud Keychain on (Settings > your name > iCloud > Passwords and Keychain).
  3. Switch on Running (and Walking or Hiking) in the iPhone app's Settings and allow Apple Health. Pick All Recorded Data for your whole history.
  4. Allow Local Network access when the iPhone asks: that's how it finds your Mac (Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network if you said no).
  5. Keep Background App Refresh on for Negative Splits (Settings > General > Background App Refresh), so runs sync without opening the app.

If it doesn't sync

  • The iPhone says it's waiting for the Mac's key: open the Mac app once, check iCloud Keychain is on in both, and give it a minute.
  • It can't find the Mac: both need the same Wi-Fi and the Mac must be awake. Some hotel, office and guest networks keep devices from seeing each other; sync at home instead.
  • Nothing new after a run: unlock the iPhone. Apple Health can't be read while the iPhone is locked, so the sync runs once you've unlocked it.

Your data

Remove Data from Mac (in the iPhone app's Settings) deletes your health records from the Mac. Switching off Send to Mac stops anything leaving the iPhone.
